A Preparatory Timeline College Planning

FRESHMAN YEAR

  • Get involved with clubs, sports, and groups right away
  • Meet with your guidance counselor
  • Practice good study habits; grades count now
  • Determine best curriculum options for sophomore year
  • Put thought into your summer plans

SOPHOMORE YEAR

  • Take on a new club, team, or volunteer opportunity
  • Focus on your grades
  • Meet with your guidance counselor
  • Begin to build a college list
  • Choose junior year classes with rigor in mind
  • Start thinking about financial aid and paying for college
  • Keep track of awards and achievements
  • Put thought into your summer plans

JUNIOR YEAR

  • Focus on grades / upward trends are the best
  • Stay involved with activities / look for ways to show leadership
  • Take the PSAT (Fall)
  • Build a standardized test plan
  • Continue to refine your college list
  • Demonstrate interest in the colleges on your list
  • Develop a relationship with a couple of your teachers - they will be writing recommendations for you

SENIOR YEAR

  • Begin work on applications (summer after junior year)

  • Work on your personal statement and supplemental essays
  • Ask for recommendations
  • Prepare for interviews, if needed
  • Send your standardized test scores
  • Submit your applications before the stated deadline
  • Submit your FAFSA on the same date as your applications
  • Create a portal to track your application status
  • Stay focused in school / don't let your grades slide
  • Review your acceptances and calculate the net cost of attending each school
